Newborn Gift Ideas

Finding a newborn gift that stands out, without falling back on yet another pajama set: this collection brings together our tried-and-true favorites, from the ultrasound photo frame to the night light and plush comforters. Something to delight both baby and their parents.

What newborn gift should you give?

A good newborn gift follows one simple rule: it should please the parents as much as it will serve the child. Drawers quickly overflow with newborn-size bodysuits, while useful or meaningful items are rare. Here's how to get it right.

Gifts that are truly useful

The night light will accompany hundreds of nights. The comfort toy, given in duplicate, earns the giver eternal gratitude the day the first one gets lost. Storage baskets come in handy from the moment you get back from the maternity ward. These gifts never end up at the back of a closet.

Gifts that tug at the heartstrings

A frame for the ultrasound video turns a pregnancy memory into a keepsake you hold on to for a lifetime. A bed canopy or a beautiful piece of wall decor help build the nest the parents are creating. These gifts tell a story, and that's what you expect from a birth.

What budget based on your relationship?

Colleague or acquaintance: a comfort toy or a prettily wrapped muslin cloth is more than enough. Close friend: a night light or a basket filled with little treats. Family: grandparents and godparents can aim for the centerpiece, a bed canopy or a complete decor set. The thought always counts more than the amount.

The group gift, the solution for big occasions

Among colleagues or friends, a shared kitty lets you aim for a memorable gift rather than five small packages. In that case, always add a card signed by everyone: in the whirlwind of the first weeks, parents rarely remember who gave what, and the card makes up for that injustice.

Should you follow the baby registry?

When there is one, yes, at least in part: it reflects real needs. Nothing stops you from adding a personal touch, a little extra that sets your package apart. If there is no registry, a discreet message to the parents spares them the third musical mobile of the week.

The right timing

Giving before the birth helps the parents prepare the nursery; giving after lets you adjust your choice. The undecided can slip their gift in at the time of the pregnancy announcement or the gender reveal, a memory that sticks. And to help pass the time while waiting, our due date calculator always delights expectant parents.
